Phnom Penh៖ Goalkeeper could be the most underrated player on the pitch, but Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng coach Conor Nestor insisted that the trend has changed recently as top managers the like of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have signed quality goalkeepers to win trophies.
Ederson Moraes won the English Premier League title twice with Manchester City, and Alisson Becker has made a huge impact at Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool since his arrival last season as the Brazilian helped them clinch their sixth UEFA Champions League title in his first season with the club.
Conor Nestor, who guided the Svay Rieng side to their second Metfone Cambodian League triumph last season, pointed out that the teams that concede the fewest goals are likely to clinch the title, and they need quality goalkeepers to achieve this.
Conor Nestor told camsports.org: “In general, if you look at the history of a lot of top managers, they value recruitment in this area [goalkeeper]. Recent signings of Ederson at Man City and Alisson at Liverpool show that perhaps that trend [underrating goalkeeper] is changing.
“To use the Metfone Cambodian League as an example for the last 2 champions, ourselves [Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng] and NagaWorld were the teams with the best defensive record.
“Statistically speaking, the teams who concede the fewest goals are most likely to win the league; however, the team who scores the most doesn’t finish top as frequently. That shows the importance of a mean defence, and of course your goalkeeper is critical for this to happen. Clean sheet is normally an indication that the whole team has helped in the defensive phases.”
