Phnom Penh៖ Thong Chanketya opened up on his referee career that he got used to being shouted at and reacted inappropriately toward to by the players and coaches on the pitch.
The 39-year-old also admitted that he sometimes made mistakes during the match, but always tried his best to minimize the errors and strictly apply the football rules.
Thong Chanketya became a referee in 2003 after finishing his referee courses at the National Institute of Education before deciding to retire in 2015.
The former Metfone Cambodian League referee told camsports.org: “I liked playing football, and I usually played football at school. During my study at National Institute of Education, I took the referee courses and became the referee in 2003.
“It’s normal in football that the players and coaches speak and act inappropriately toward the referee, but as a referee you must be calm and apply football rules on the pitch. You need to be careful with your behavior and try to explain them, but sometimes you need to react based on the situation. You need to control the situation on the pitch so that the game can be played till the end.
“I think referee can sometimes make mistakes during the game, and even the world referee still makes mistakes. We try to minimize the mistakes and improve, but it’s not easy as sometimes we need to run a lot and get tired, and we need to make decision quickly.
“I love this career, and I have more than ten years of experience as a referee. I have joined several courses related to Referee Assessor, so hopefully I can work to help young and inexperienced referees.”
