Phnom Penh៖ Cambodia begins their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers second round campaign this Thursday as they welcome Hong Kong at the National Olympic Stadium.
The KoupreyBlues downed Pakistan 4-1 on aggregate, winning 2-0 at home and 2-1 away from home to secure a spot in the second round of the qualification stage for two consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Drawn in Group C, Cambodia will face Hong Kong, Bahrain, Iran, and Iraq in the home and away matches, with Conor Nestor predicting that Cambodia could get four points, meaning that they are unlikely to advance to the next stage.
The Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng coach, who guides the Svay Rieng side to the top of the Cambodian League table this season, believes that Hong Kong should be the team Felix Dalmas’s side could secure points from.
Conor Nestor told camsports.org: “It’s really difficult a group with Iran one of the best teams from the last World Cup. Both Iraq and Bahrain played at the Asian Cup in January, but I believe in the talent here and also the plan the [Cambodia] National Team coaches are making.”
“I think that they [Cambodia] can get 1 win and 1 draw in the group and that would be a progress. They must target Hong Kong home and away. It won’t be easy as Hong Kong won 4 games the last time they played at this level for the World Cup in 2018.”
“When you look at the fact, most of their players play in the Hong Kong league, and they must attack this game with belief and confidence.”
“I don’t believe the [Cambodia] National Team got enough respect for their performance and results against Pakistan. That was a Pakistan team with 4 or 5 players playing in Europe, and Cambodia not only beat them twice, but also completely out-played their opponent.”
“Interestingly, the Pakistan Captain Zesh Rehman plays his club football in Hong Kong. Perhaps that indicates Cambodia have what it takes to win this game.”
