Phnom Penh៖ Conor Nestor targets another AFC Cup Group G victory as Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng entertain Than Quang Ninh at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
The champions of Cambodia were made to work hard in a 0-0 draw with Phnom Penh Crown on Sunday, and Conor Nestor is concerned about his side’s tiredness ahead of Wednesday’s AFC Cup tie against the Vietnamese side.
The Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng coach told camsports.org: “It’s true we have 2 days less to rest than our opponents, and there is no denying that puts us at a disadvantage. I mentioned this point when we went to the fixtures meeting at the start of the season. Some fixtures should be moved a day earlier, and this gives Cambodian teams a better chance.
“In the end, if we win games in this competition, it means more teams qualify from Cambodia, but we just have to do our best. We want to make our supporters proud, so that’s our motivation no matter the competition or the opponents on Wednesday will be.
“Of course, it will be difficult. We respect our opponents, but we also have the confidence of only losing 3 times in our last 43 competitive games – once on penalties in a cup final, once the last game of the season when we already won the league, and once against the top team in South East Asia [Ceres Negros].
“I think our team enjoys the tough challenges and relishes the opportunity to earn a little more respect than we are sometimes given.”
Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng will be without Cambodia international midfielder Prak Monyudom due to a head injury he picked up during Sunday’s Metfone Cambodian League draw with Phnom Penh Crown.
Conor Nestor said: “We will be without [Prak] Monyudom as we have to give him four days of recovery due to a head injury picked up on Sunday. We will miss him, but we will fight to make sure we are in a good position when he returns.”
