Phnom Penh៖ Sum Vanna has yet to reveal who will be Phnom Penh Crown’s first choice goalkeeper, and new signing Um Vichet said he needs to fight for his place in the Red Singha’s starting XI this season.
The Phnom Penh Crown caretaker manager must be hopeful that the former Ministry of National Defense goalkeeper, who has a wide range of experience with both club and national team, will be the answer to his goalkeeper issues.
Vichet will compete with young goalkeepers the like of Saveng Samnang and Kong Chanvuthy to break into the starting XI, but it is easily understood that he is ahead due to his experience and quality.
Um Vichet told camsports.org: “I’m a newcomer to the team, and of course I need time to adapt and learn from my teammates.
“We have a lot of talented youngsters, and for me I will give my best to help the team succeed this season, but I’m not 100 per cent sure we will win the league.
“The coach has not decided who will be the team’s first option goalkeeper yet. I feel pressured for sure, but not a big pressure. They are young goalkeepers, but they have learned from their mistakes to improve. They are working really hard each day.
“I’m an experienced goalkeeper, and for sure I will share my experience with them. I’m here not only to be a goalkeeper, but also a mentor for young players. It’s not easy to be a goalkeeper. You need to learn and make good connection with defenders.
“All big clubs aim for trophies, but as you know we have a lot of young players, so it won’t be easy. We all at the club have been working very hard, and hopefully we can bring the trophy back to the club.”
