Phnom Penh៖ Despite failing to secure the Cambodian League title, Hao Socheat reckons that this season is a great season for Boeung Ket after they clinched the Hun Sen Cup for the first time in their club’s history.

Ten-man Boeung Ket went on to beat Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng 5-4 on penalty shootouts after they held Conor Nestor’s side to a 1-1 draw after extra times.

Boeung Ket broke the deadlock after a tense first half as Mon Vanda made a quick move from behind the opponent full-back Sareth Krya to head home, giving Hao Socheat’s side a stunning lead just two minutes into the second half.

In the half way of the second half, left-back Sath Rozib committed a handball inside his penalty box and was then red-carded, with a penalty rewarded to Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng.

Second-half substitute Nub Tola equalized for Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng from the penalty spot as the Hun Sen Cup final went into the penalty shootouts.

Sovanarath denied Khuon Laboravy’s penalty, while Hul Kimhuy made two saves during the penalty shootouts to win Boeung Ket their first Hun Sen Cup in their club’s history.

Hao Socheat told camsports.org: “Honestly speaking, I am very happy and excited that Boeung Ket can clinch the Hun Sen Cup this season, and it is the first time in our club’s history.

“Everything and what we did during the game is what we had planned. Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng is a good side that can keep the ball possession quite well.

“In the second half, we made some changes to switch our formation, but our early goal in the second half is a mistake from the Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng player.

“We failed to win the league title, and we feel really bad about that. However, we have just made history for our club by winning the Hun Sen Cup, so this season is a great season for us.”

Chan Vathanaka was quiet before being replaced by Mat Noron in the sixty-third minute, and Hao Socheat explained that the Cambodia international striker couldn’t play with his full potential due to injury.

“Chan Vathanaka was not fit 100% during last night’s game,” said the Boeung Ket coach.
