Phnom Penh៖ Boeung Ket manager Be Makara claimed that striker Chan Vathanaka is open to the opportunity to join the Cambodia National Team should he receives the call-up.

The Boeung Ket striker was dropped from his national team squad during Cambodia’s 4-1 aggregate win over Pakistan in the first round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 25-year-old continued to miss Cambodia’s first two Group C matches in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers second round as Felix Dalmas made a shock decision to leave the striker out during a 1-1 draw with Hong Kong and a 1-0 defeat to Bahrain.

The Cambodia coach insisted in the pre-Hong Kong press conference that he selected only the players who had desire to play for the team, which raised a speculation over Chan Vathanaka’s commitment to play for Cambodia.

Be Makara, however, made it clear that Chan Vathanaka is still committed to Felix Dalmas’s side if they need his service.

Be Makara told “I think every player has desire to play for the national team, so I think if [Chan] Vathanaka receives a call-up, I think he will join the national team.

“It’s hard to say anything whether it is a big loss for Cambodia without Chan Vathanaka. As we all know he is a quality striker, and at the moment no strikers are better than him.

“But it depends on the coach’s team tactic, so I don’t know whether it is a big loss for Cambodia, but if he joins the team, he will give the team more options in the attack. Having him in the team can make it easy for the coach to select strikers.

“He had injury, and it could affect his form. He, however, can still finish well as he has scored in almost every game he plays for the team. Now he is not 100% fit yet.”
