Phnom Penh៖ Cambodia play their first Group C match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers second round this evening as they take on Hong Kong at the National Olympic Stadium, with Bin Chantha Thierry excluded from the Cambodia National Team squad.
The Terengganu midfielder, who regularly receives a call up to join the Cambodia National Team, was a part of the team that defeated Pakistan 4-1 on aggregate in the first round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The French-Khmer born explained his exclusion from Felix Dalmas’s side due to injury he picked up in July as he didn’t recover on time despite returning to training with his club on Monday this week.
The 28-year-old, however, still shows his support as he will follow Cambodia’s Group C opener against Hong Kong with his family at home. The KoupreyBlues have a young squad, though the former Phnom Penh Crown player believes that they are competitive enough to face Hong Kong, who have a better physical advantage.
Bin Chantha Thierry told camsports.org: “I’m injured since July. I just got back with team training on Monday, so it’s normal that I don’t have name. It is not about fair or not or hard feeling as it’s only about being able to join or not, and I’m not.
“I will always be a fan and be behind our national team, so yes I will watch it at home with my family.
“We are very competitive even though our players are young. They have great skill and good understanding of the game under Honda and Felix. We have our tactic and game plan that we follow, so only physical could be the problem.”
